Petition with the AP State Human Rights Commissioner

By admin

The Right to Walk Foundation recently filed a petition with the AP State Human Rights Commissioner alleging that city officials’ refusal to address walkability concerns in Hyderabad constitutes a violation of citizens’ fundamental rights to education, work, an adequate standard of living, and freedom of movement and residence.

The petition calls for six changes to pedestrian policy in Hyderabad, such as the implementation of manned pedestrian crossings, clear demarcation of sidewalks and a “no encroachment” policy, and the requirement that all government employees travel to work using non-motorized or public transportation at least one day a week.

About

The Right to Walk Foundation is a Hyderabad based NGO campaigning for pedestrian rights. It is registered society under the Andhra Pradesh Registration Act, 2001 and the registration number is 468 of 2008. The Foundation takes its root from the shared concern that the GHMC had failed to provide the common man with a wide enough footpath; free of encroachments, stench and garbage to walk on and from the fact that to-date, there has been no clear-cut focus on problems faced by pedestrians in the city or measures to solve the same.
